The Boat Safety Scheme has been developed to ensure safe installation of systems in boats. A BSS certificate is required by most inland waterways navigation authorities before a licence is issued. The inspection covers installations such as:
Fuel Systems
Electrical Systems
Fire Protection and Escape
Gas/LPG Installations
Fuel Burning Appliances and Flue Installations
Ventilation
Pollution Prevention.
Although primarily for inland vessels, using the scheme as a guide does ensure good standards of installation for sea going vessels as well. Details and a complete guide can be found at www.boatsafetyscheme.com.
Most non-tidal rivers and canals in the UK now require a BSS certificate to obtain a licence, including the Thames and Medway. Inspections of sea going vessels intending to spend time on these rivers are regularly undertaken all along the south and east coasts.
Being 'Gas Safe' registered, it is possible to issue certificates to commercial boats, such as hire boats, and residential boats.
